“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” — Psalm 42:5 NIV
Biblical hope is a firm belief in the future that is based on God's promises. Biblical hope is not a desire that something will happen—it is an expectation that it will happen. This kind of hope is grounded in God's unchanging nature rather than external circumstances. It is a hope that can see us through challenging times and give us the willpower to persevere. Christians are required to be hopeful individuals. Our hope is in the assurance of an eternity with God, not in the things of this world. We can have faith in the faithfulness of God and His ability to see us through to the other side even in the midst of trials and tribulations.
According to Hebrews 11:1, "faith is the conviction of things unseen and the assurance of things hoped for” (NIV). Hope and faith are inseparable. We are unable to have either faith or hope without the other. We can have faith in God's promises even when we are unable to see them with our physical eyes because of our hope in God. We have already mentioned Romans 4, which is a great illustration of what it means to put our hope in God. It says “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed” (Romans 4:18 NIV). Again we see the connection between faith and hope. Abraham, who was past childbearing age, placed his faith in God's promise that he would be the father of many nations. From a human perspective, the situation was hopeless, but Abraham had faith that God could fulfill His promise. Abraham had the ability to believe in God's promise because of his hope in Him. In the same way, when we place our hope in God, we can have confidence that He will keep His word to us. We can rest assured that God is with us and that He is orchestrating everything for our benefit, regardless of what we may be going through.
So take Psalm 42:5 to heart today and place your faith in God. He has called you to live a life of faith and hope, confident that your faithful God will never desert or abandon you.
