“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul” — Hebrews 6:19 NKJV
According to the author of Hebrews, we have an anchor for our souls that is secure in God's very presence. An anchor is a beautiful and appropriate metaphor that is used to describe our hope. Similar to how an anchor keeps a ship steady during a storm, hope keeps us steady in the midst of life's storms. This anchor is strong and reliable, even more so than a ship's anchor in the natural world. We can put all our trust in its ability to keep us in place. It is consoling to know that there is something we can rely on that will never change, even in a world that is constantly changing. Even though we go through difficulties and trials, our anchor keeps us grounded. We can rely on God to be with us through every storm and to bring us to a triumphant conclusion.
We will always be let down if we look to the outside world for security. We will be let down by money, relationships, and even our own strength. But we will never be let down if we put our trust in God. His love for us is unwavering. All we have to do is cling tenaciously to the hope we have in Christ—to cling to His presence and His promises for our very souls. We can trust our anchor, which keeps us steady in the face of the waves, no matter what storms we encounter.
May we never lose sight of the fact that we worship an eternally dependable and loving God.
When you read the context of Hebrews, you see that it Christ, our forerunner, has entered heaven on our behalf, and is seated in the heavenly sanctuary, interceding for us. While we may feel like
we are storm-battered down here, our faith tell us that He is sustaining us up there. The hope we have does not depend on our ability to withstand the storm, but on His ability to anchor us within it. We can find solace in the unchanging character of God. He is a sure and steadfast anchor for our souls. No matter what challenges we face, may we cling to our dependency on Him and have faith and and unshakeable hope that He will bring us through.
