The One Who Reveals Jesus

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” — John 16:14 NKJV

When you read the Gospels, you notice that Jesus always points back to the Father. Over and over again, Jesus does not glorify Himself, but He gives glory to the Father. “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me” (John 4:34); “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do” (5:19); “I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (5:30); “I say whatever the Father tells me to say” (12:50). It is the nature of Christ to point to the Father.

In the same way that Christ points to the Father, the Holy Spirit points to Christ. Jesus said, “when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-14).

Before we come to Christ, we are living apart from the power of the Holy Spirit. Apart from salvation, we are what Paul called “the natural man” (1 Cor. 2:14), or “the person without the Spirit” (NIV). We need the Holy Spirit to have a revelation of Jesus, the Heavenly Man. Only the Holy Spirit can open the eyes of your heart and reveal who Jesus truly is. Then when we are saved, the Holy Spirit still makes Jesus real and very near as we pray in the Spirit and read the Word.

Even unsaved people can have an appreciation for who Jesus is — He is everything we wish we could be.  But we don’t need an appreciation of who Jesus is. We need a revelation of who Jesus is. Your mind can show you facts about Jesus, but the Holy Spirit comes to show you the face of Jesus. The Holy Spirit will make the person of Jesus real to the eyes of your heart as you look to Jesus today.
