David: A Passionate Pursuit Of The Presence

“The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart” — 1 Samuel 13:14 ESV

David is a very lovable Bible character. Even though he had his failures that seem to us to be rather extreme, David is still esteemed very positively in the Bible. Why is that? I believe it is because of his value system. David valued the presence of God above all else. That is why we love him, and that is why God declared him to be “a man after his own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14).

What was different about David? David had a New Testament heart in and Old Testament era.

Look at the Tabernacle of David in comparison with the Tabernacle of Moses. Moses represents the Law. When God commanded Moses to construct a tabernacle, the details are extensive. In fact, you might have noticed that about a third of the Book of Exodus is simply God’s instruction to Moses about what kind of dwelling place he was to make for the presence of God. From the type of material each piece of furniture was to be, to the exact length of rods and curtains, and so on, every detail was spelled out for Moses. But not for David. David simply put a tent up and did the same thing he had done in a field when no one was watching—he worshipped. He sang and played his harp, and the only difference was now he had a greater platform, and could influence multitudes of people to come and play instruments and sing and pray as well. David did all this from the heart. It wasn’t because God commanded him to do it and gave him all the details. David simply had a desire to love God with all his heart.

Though he was rejected by his father and his family (1 Samuel 16), he found a place to appear before God. He failed in moments, but the overall sincerity of his heart was evidence in the passionate pursuit of God’s presence.

Today, right now, in the middle what may look like brokenness, or failure, or rejection, make a place for the presence of God, and never stop the pursuit.
