“For we walk by faith, not by sight” — 2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV
You are surely familiar with the first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 NKJV). Within that verse, we see that there are two dimensions of existence in God’s universe: the heavens, and the earth. The heavens include three levels: 1) the atmospheric heaven (the air and sky); 2) the celestial heaven (the spirit world, the dwelling of angels and demons); and 3) heaven, the dwelling place of God.
The heavenly realm is invisible and spiritual. In contrast, every interaction you have in this earthly realm involves your five senses. Living by sight gives you a sense of security because you can see, touch, hear, and so on. Anyone can walk by sight, but we as believers are called to walk by faith, which is living from the heavenly realm. The challenge of this is that you have to take God at His Word.
In the Bible, when God made a promise, oftentimes the circumstances people encountered in life after receiving the promise seemed to contradict the promise altogether. Joseph had a dream of being a ruler and ended up forsaken and imprisoned. Abraham had a promise of being a father and then found out his wife was barren. Moses was called to be a deliverer and ended up on the backside of the desert with flocks of smelly sheep for 40 years, and the list goes on. This is all part of God’s process of teaching us faith. When what I see contradicts what God says, what do I believe? Where do I put my trust? The question in every season is always, “Am I going to live by what I see, or by what God says?”
When God speaks to you and shows you a vision of the future, or you have faith for what He is about to do in your life, or you are clinging to a promise in His Word, all hell may break loose. If I live by sight, I have to wait for things to change before I make a move. But if I live by faith, I don’t need to see it in the natural realm to advance in life. I can trust what God has said. The circumstances all around you may seem to come against the promise. Do not be moved by what you see, but only by what He says. He is faithful. It will surely come to pass.
