Daniel: Praying Through

“O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you” — Daniel 10:11 ESV

When Daniel was in Babylonian captivity, there was an event that became pivotal in his life and in Israel’s history. Daniel 9:2-3 says, “in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes” (NIV).

Daniel got into the Word till the Word got into him. Then he prayed and fasted and called on God, and it shaped history.

Reading the Bible, he found prophetic scriptures that spoke to the exact moment in Israel’s history in which he found himself. Something shifted deep within Daniel. He decided that he wanted to be a part of what God was doing. He couldn’t just sit back and let life happen — he had a desire to make history with God.

After 21 days of prayer and fasting, he had an angelic encounter that gave him confidence that his prayers had been heard and the situation was turning around. In Daniel 10:11-13, the angel Gabriel came and gave Daniel not only a confidence that his prayer was heard, but also a revelation of the future, a revelation of the way spiritual warfare works during prayer, and even why there was a delay. As lagniappe, Gabriel started his address by saying, “O Daniel, man greatly loved,” which gave him a personal revelation of the love of God for himself. It told him what heaven was saying about him. That was something he wasn’t looking for, but he got it anyway. I believe he had that revelation of God’s love and heaven’s approval because he stuck it out in faith, still praying and believing, though not having seen any result.

Get in the Word until the Word gets into you. Pray and fast and call on the God of the Bible. Pray through until you break through. You will get more than you came for.
