“The Word was God” — John 1:1 ESV
Jesus is God. He called Himself God. The Father called Him God. And it took His disciples a while, but they finally realized that He was God (John 20:28).
People have always come up with ideas about what God is like (Romans 1:21). People love to philosophize and talk about who God is and what He is like. The Bible says “God has planted eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT). The truth is, God is un-knowable unless revealed. We can all have our own religious ideas, but unless God reveals Himself, we are guessing when it comes to knowing who He is and what He is like. Religious systems can speculate and pontificate all day long, but we need God Himself to tell us about Himself. We either have revelation or we have speculation.
Thankfully, God has revealed Himself. And He has revealed Himself in the most unexpected, in-depth, and shocking way. God became a man, took on a human body, faced what we faced, and took our sins upon Himself to save us from our own destruction. Unthinkable! Who would ever come up with something like that? Out of all of the religious creeds and dogmas that have come along, there has never been a story that goes like this. No human thought of this. God Himself entered His own creation. And he didn’t just float around on a cloud. He didn’t just take on the form of an angel. He took on a body with real eyes and a real brain and real blood and real nerve endings that really felt pain. He knows rejection. He knows temptation. He knows what you’re going through right now. That God is unthinkable, unfathomable, inconceivable. He is Jesus. He is our God.
