Another Helper

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper” — John 14:16

In this passage (John chapters 14-16) Jesus was at the Last Supper. He was telling His disciples that after He ascended back to the Father, He would send the Holy Spirit.  And in these chapters, Jesus says what the Spirit would do to minister to His followers: He would teach them, help them, guide them into all truth, empower them, and reveal the supernatural person of Jesus to the eyes of their hearts.

Jesus called the Holy Spirit “Another Helper.” Looking at the original language helps paint a picture of what He meant.  The Greek word for “another” here is “allon,” which means “another of the same kind.” The Greek word for “Helper” is “paraclete," which means “one called alongside to help.” The essence of what Jesus is saying is, “Even though I am leaving, I am really not leaving, because I am sending the Holy Spirit to be my replacement. He is just like me, and will do what I have been doing, and empower you to do the same.”

If you’re like me, you’ve read the Gospels and thought about how amazing it would be to be one of the disciples—how amazing it would be to be right there while Jesus was teaching and healing people.  How breathtaking it would be to hear His words, to see Him interact with people, to experience Him in person.  But the mind-blowing fact is that in this same passage, Jesus doesn’t just say Him sending the Holy Spirit is the same as Him being there in person — He says it’s better (John 16:7).

Why is it better? Because then they had Jesus on the outside, speaking His words, and now we have Jesus on the inside, speaking His words. Time spent with the Holy Spirit is like time spent with Jesus. Draw near to the Holy Spirit today.  He is your Helper who is just like Jesus.
