“I have come… to do the will of him who sent me. — John 6:38 ESV
This entry may be unexpected. You may wonder why we would look to Jesus as an example of what it is to have relationship and encounter with God. After all, he is God himself (John 1:1) — shouldn’t he be in his own category?
And technically, he is in his own category by his very nature. But this is the beauty of the incarnation. He descended to earth with all of its problems, to a human body with all its limitations, and lived a life just like ours — yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). This perfect life that Jesus lived was a nonstop encounter with the Father — unbroken communion, unending fellowship, constant connection. He never broke God’s law by sinning, and he never broke God’s heart by turning away from fellowship, as Adam did. He lived the life that we have all failed to live — the life without sin. But what does that involve? There was a loving union between the Father and the Son. Jesus valued this union more than he desired to experience the pleasures of sin. Why did he not sin when tempted? Because he didn’t want to. James 1:14-15 says, ”each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire… gives birth to sin.” Jesus valued the Father’s pleasure over sin’s pleasure. Because sin would involve leaving the presence of the Father, he had no desire to do so. That was the key to his holy life.
Oh Jesus, we love you! Sinless Savior, Spotless Lamb, Blessed Redeemer! Anointed, Crucified, Risen, Exalted One, Returning King, may your name be praised forevermore, you Beautiful, Wonderful, Precious Christ of God! Eternity is not enough to tell of your praise. We bow down before you, we lay every crown at your feet. You are so worthy. You are so holy. Oh to be like you, to live for the Father’s glory! Oh to be with you, living in unhindered union with the Father. May we not live for ourselves, but for him who died and rose again — who was and is and is to come. Wonderful Jesus.
