“Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” — Genesis 6:8 ESV
Noah walked with God in the midst of an extremely ungodly culture, was obedient when appointed with a very difficult, long-term task, was remembered by the Lord and delivered from death, built the first altar to the Lord, was honored by God with an everlasting covenant, was called “a preacher of righteousness,” and was used by the Lord Jesus as a sermon illustration of what it would be like for us as Christians in the last days (Genesis 6:8-12, 22; 8:1, 20; 9:14-17; 2 Peter 2:5; Matthew 24:37-39).
While you may be surprised to see how much Noah is mentioned in the Bible, there is yet another fascinating passage of Scripture about Noah. It is found in the summary of his life and character in Hebrews 11:7: “By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
Did you read that? Noah condemned the world! What does that mean? It means something very powerful. By Noah’s example of being set apart as a godly person in an ungodly culture, he was shining a light in the darkness. He set the standard of righteousness against the backdrop of lawlessness. In doing this, he made it obvious to the watching world that not only is it possible to live a godly life, but there is no excuse on judgment day for a person who heard the warning and also saw someone walk the walk right in front of them. Noah’s secret to walking with God was that he was set apart. He kept a different value system than the rest of the world. His reverent fear moved him to preach and prepare — to reach out to those around him, starting with his family. He condemned the world simply by walking by faith and living a righteous life before his family and community. And you can be a Noah in your generation by doing the exact same things.
