“His name shall be called Wonderful” -- Isaiah 9:6 ESV
“Wonderful” is one of those words we throw around without considering the weight of everything it means. We call our beach vacation “wonderful.” We call a friend’s fashion sense “wonderful.” We call a lot of things “wonderful,” that don’t actually inspire wonder.
I’m stating the obvious here, but to call something “wonderful” means that it fills you with wonder.
The word translated “Wonderful” in Isaiah 9:6 actually means “miracle.” It speaks not just of an exclamation that something is amazing (i.e., “That’s wonderful!”). It speaks of God “working wonders.” And it is one of the names of Jesus. Jesus is Wonderful.
Everywhere Jesus went, the miraculous broke out. Even His conception was by the power of the Holy Spirit. His birth caused angels to marvel. His life caused people to wonder. Looking back at His death and resurrection we are filled with wonder. Looking with the eyes of our heart right now, we can see this Wonderful Jesus sitting at the right hand of the throne of God.
Everything about Jesus is supernatural. When He walks into the room, the impossible becomes possible. He is the miracle worker, because He comes from a realm where nothing is impossible. His works provoke wonder. He makes the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk. He works wonders, not because it’s what He does, but because it’s who He is. He is wonderful.
Are you full of wonder? Or has the busy-ness of life knocked the wonder out of you? Look to Jesus, the one who is Wonderful. And you will be filled with wonder.
