Adam: Surrounded With Glory

“You have crowned him with glory and honor” — Psalm 8:5 ESV

It may seem strange to start our time together by looking at Adam, since he failed so badly in his relationship with God. But you may be surprised to find out that there are actually some very important principles to be learned about our relationship with God by looking at Adam. What we see when we look at the creation of Adam is a prototype of what it means to be in relationship with God. God created Adam for relationship. Within the first man was the ability to walk with God, to fellowship with him, and to know him. Furthermore, Adam was given dominion over everything in creation. With the creation of Adam and Eve, the Bible introduces many principles: stewardship, authority and submission, gender and sexuality, marriage and family, the priority of a fasted lifestyle and the disastrous results of going outside of God and his principles to get your needs met.

But there is one major principle here that sets the trajectory for everything else: Adam was created to be in the presence of God. Just as birds were created for the sky and fish were created for water, Adam was created for the presence of God. So were you, and so was I. In talking about the creation of man, Psalm 8:5 says that God “crowned him with glory and honor.” The Hebrew word for “crowned” doesn’t mean a crown that you put on your head; it means “surrounded, encompassed, encircled.” Adam was surrounded with God’s glory and lived in God’s presence. God walked with him (Gen. 3:8), surrounded him, and fellowshipped with him. That is God’s plan for you and for me today above all else — that we be with him and experience his presence. There we will find our purpose. Go to him today — ask for his presence and you just might experience him surrounding you and walking with you.
