“Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.” — Luke 1:45
In Luke 1, we see two contrasting ways people responded to what God had promised. When Mary heard that she would become pregnant and give birth to the Messiah, she asked, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” She didn't question the promise; instead, she was trying to figure out how it could happen. In response, the angel Gabriel told her that the promise would come true when the Holy Spirit would come over her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her (Luke 1:35). On the other hand, Zechariah’s “How” was different. He was also given a promise, but he responded with fear of change and a hint of unbelief. When he was told that his wife would have a son who would prepare the way for the Lord, he asked, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years” (1:18). Because he didn't believe, he was made silent until he took action on his faith and did what God said. Beloved, let us resolve to believe God's promises, even if we don't fully understand how they will happen.
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV).
We can be sure that there will be a fulfillment of His words if we trust and believe in Him.
Now, the word "fulfillment" also carries a prophetic significance. There will be a fulfillment not only of God's promises, but also of our deepest desires. We find ourselves fulfilled when His word is fulfilled in our lives! Mary said, “Let it be to be according to Your word” (Luke 1:38), and the angel declared that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken. She not only saw the Word of God fulfilled, but she found herself fulfilled in that Word. Faith is where it’s at for the Christian. Taking God at His word is the only option. The old hymn rings true when it says, “Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
