Josiah: Bible Revival In Israel

“And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord.” — 2 Chronicles 34:30 ESV

When you read the accounts of the kings of Israel, it appears to be a rollercoaster of “good kings” and “bad kings.” The accounts are full character profiles of said good and bad kings. Their lives give very clear examples of what to do and what not to do. Josiah was a good king — one of the best. He is most noted for removing the official worship of false gods that had unfortunately been instituted in Israel. There is, however, another feature of his reign that should be noted, and that is what we will focus on. Josiah brought a Bible Revival to Israel.

Why did the people of Israel begin to worship foreign gods instead of their covenant God, Yahweh? Largely because they had not been hearing his Word.

During Josiah’s reign, the priest Hilkiah found the Book of the Law in the temple. It was read to Josiah like a modern audio Bible, and he fell under conviction. He realized that Israel had not only been given to idolatry, but they hadn’t followed any of God’s precepts at all! King Josiah then read the Book of the Law to the people. Revival, reformation, and repentance followed.

The Bible is kindling for the fire of God. It purifies and sanctifies, enlightens and empowers, convicts and inspires, cuts and heals. It speaks to the deepest part of who we are. It releases the presence of the Holy Spirit and deposits spiritual power into our lives.

If you want to experience a new move of God in your life — call it personal revival, returning to your first love, whatever you want to call it — immerse yourself the Word of God. It will be the landing pad that the Holy Spirit rests upon to bring refreshing and renewal to your life
