“O Lord, let your ear be attentive… ” — Nehemiah 1:11 ESV
Nehemiah had a vision from God, along with a desire to get the vision accomplished. He also had the anointing, or divine power, to transition the task from vision to reality. He said it this way: “… the good hand of my God was upon me” (Nehemiah 2:8). There is a pattern to God gets His work done on the earth, evident both in the Bible and personal experience. You can see this pattern in the life of Nehemiah. In Nehemiah chapter 2, you see three phases of how the vision was realized. The way the text is worded in the New Living Translation is very helpful, so we will use that translation in this instance. In Nehemiah 2:12, we see the first phase, which Nehemiah refers to as “the plans God had put in my heart.” Then in verse 16, he uses the words, “my plans.” The last phrase he uses is found in verse 19: “our plan.” Vision from God starts with God putting plans in your heart. But then you must take personal ownership of those plans until you can say they are “my plans.” But it can’t stop with you — it’s not about you! “My plans” have to become “our plan.” God is looking for us to not only take responsibility for the vision, but to share the vision with other people who will take ownership of it. Then we will get God’s work done together. When you zoom out and see it from God’s perspective, you realize it all starts with God. The plans Nehemiah had were the plans God had put in his heart. The process of it moving from “my plans” to “our plans” is also a work of God in the human heart. He speaks to one leader and gives that leader a burden for the task He wants done, then He brings the leader to the end of his or herself, then He causes other people to lay hold of the vision for themselves.
Do you have a vision from God? Something that is bigger than yourself and serves other people? Give it back to God, let him bless it and bless other people. Only then can “my plans” become “our plan.”
