“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things” — John 14:26 NKJV
The word “teach” here is the Greek word didasko, which means “to inform, instruct, demonstrate, to prescribe.”
Concerning the word didasko, The NIV Theological Dictionary of New Testament says, “The word is used typically for the relationship between teacher and pupil, instructor, and apprentice. What is taught may be not only knowledge, opinions, or facts but also artistic and technical skills, all of which are to be systematically and thoroughly acquired by the learner through the activity of a teacher.”
Jesus was the Teacher and His disciples were the students. Jesus told his disciples that He was going away and that He would send the Holy Spirit—the Helper, One like Himself—and that one of the roles of the Spirit would be that He would be their new Teacher. Just as Jesus taught His disciples, the Holy Spirit now teaches us.
The disciples had the best Bible teacher of all time. Sitting under Jesus’ ministry was far better than any Bible College or Seminary School you could ever attend. If you thought about it, you might get jealous of the fact that the disciples got to sit and listen to Jesus teach in person, and that you only get to have some of the words that He said written down. But the fact is, they should be jealous of you. They had the best Bible teacher in front of them, but you have Him inside of you! They heard His words in passing, but you have them written down forever!
They had their Teacher with them for three years, and then He said he would be sending another Teacher just like Himself. This teacher tells you what His own words mean, and also teaches you, as an apprentice, how to live them out in real life. This is what it is to walk in the Spirit. This is what it is to “apply the Bible to your life.” The Author is the Teacher, and He goes with you everywhere you go.
