“The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face” —Exodus 33:11 ESV
Moses’ life was marked by encounters with God. From the burning bush, to the ascent of the mountain of the Lord, to the moment his heart cried, “Show me your glory,” Moses had gotten to know the Lord. As it says in Psalm 103:7, the Lord “made known his ways to Moses.” Moses was surrounded by people who weren’t exactly seeking the Lord with all their hearts. In Exodus 33:7-11, Moses went to the Tent of Meeting, and as the name implies, he met with God. The passage says that this tent was far away from the camp, separate from everyone else. And it also says that everyone who wanted to seek the Lord was invited to the tent. But it only says Moses went! He brought his assistant, Joshua, but other than that, it seems the people of Israel were find with watching Moses seek God from their own tents. They would rather be spectators than participators, watching Moses seek God as entertainment instead of seeking God for their own encounter.
Moses wanted to be close to God. Other people didn’t want to pay the price. My proximity to God is the direct reflection of my pursuit of him. The intensity of my flame is based on how close I’ve been to the All Consuming Fire. The main principle is this: my devotion to God is not based on what everyone around me is doing and how intensely they are seeking his face. My devotion is based on a divine invitation from a God who is a hiding place, who invites me to a secret place so that he can make me a dwelling place. I am called to draw near to God. If other people want to keep some level of distance from God so that they can keep their comfort, I will not lower my devotion to meet the low standard. I will raise the standard and set the pace by going into the Tent of Meeting no matter who comes with me or who stays behind. I have decided to live a life of pursuit, and if it means I lose friends to gain friendship with God, so be it. I am invited, and I have accepted the invitation.
