Faith Comes By Hearing And Hearing

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” —Romans 10:17 NKJV

In the Gospels and the Book of Revelation, Jesus says repeatedly, "He who has an ear to hear, let him hear.” This expression suggests that in addition to using our physical ears, we also need to hear with our hearts. It is worth noting that Jesus always uses this phrase after He says something important, not before. He is basically saying, “You heard it, but did you hear it? You heard it with your ears, now let it reach your heart.”

To enable the word of God to take root in our lives, we must receive it with an eager and open heart. Hearing the word of God with your natural ear and then hearing again in your spirit man—the deepest part of you and the part that connects with God—produces faith. It is a process that both our physical and spiritual senses are a part of. The Word enters our minds when we hear it, but before it can produce fruit, it must also get to our hearts.

Our faith develops and grows as a result of hearing and internalizing God's word. Most Christians, when asked what they read in the Word that morning or what their pastor preached on yesterday would have to think hard about how to answer. But if those same people ate an exceptional meal for breakfast that day, they would have no problem telling you all about it! This is because they read the Bible and listen to sermons just like they're taking in any other piece of information—with their natural ears only and not the ears of their heart. Faith requires the right environment to grow, just as a seed requires healthy soil, sunlight, and water. The Bible must be our constant food source, and we must study it day and night. When we do this, our hearts are transformed into places where God's word can flourish and yield a plentiful harvest.

The Bible is alive and active in our lives once we hear it and receive it. So let's be careful to hear and internalize God's word. Our hearts should be ready to receive and respond to God's word, so may they be open to hearing it. As we continue to eat from the Word of truth, our hearts will be filled with faith.
