The One Who Anoints Us

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, for He has anointed Me” — Luke 4:18 NKJV

“The anointing” is a phrase that gets thrown around frequently without really being defined. The anointing is the presence of the Holy Spirit, but it’s much more specific than that.  It is the power of God, but it’s still more specific.

The anointing is the presence and power of the Holy Spirit released for a purpose, bringing about God’s results.

The word “Christ” means “Anointed.” Jesus Christ is the Anointed One. The Bible says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all those who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38). Notice here how the anointing brings about God’s results. This parallels Luke 4, where Jesus said that the anointing would result in brokenhearted people being healed, the captives being set free, the blind seeing, the poor and marginalized hearing the good news of the gospel, and so on. Things happen in the anointing. And things happen that couldn’t happen apart from the anointing.  It is the supernatural power of God released for a purpose. And it brings results.

Although Jesus was fully God, He never did miracles till He was anointed with the Spirit. There are 37 miracles of Jesus recorded in the Gospels, and all of them happened by the anointing. The anointing enables people to do the supernatural works of God. The anointing is in the spiritual realm what money is in the physical realm. It enables you to do things you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.  If I want to invest in real estate or start a business or even pay my bills, I need money.  If I want to live like Jesus, I need the anointing.

One amazing thing about the anointing is that the same anointing Jesus had is upon us, His followers. 1 John 2:20 says, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One.” You have it. You have the anointing that Jesus had. Walk in it by faith and you will see God’s results.
