Isaiah: From The Presence To The Prophetic

“Here I am! Send me.” — Isaiah 6:8

The prophet Isaiah has been called “The Messianic Messenger.” His book is filled with prophecies about Jesus’ birth, early life, anointing, miracle ministry, extensive details about crucifixion, resurrection, the events surrounding his second coming, and even a portrait of his worldwide leadership during the yet-future Millennial Reign of Christ.

So we see many images in the Book of Isaiah about Christ. But the most remarkable image Isaiah saw was in chapter six. The famous passage reads, “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple” (Isaiah 6:1). Later, in John 12:41, we see that “Isaiah… saw Jesus’ glory” (NIV), which was speaking of this event. Isaiah saw Jesus Himself, the second Person of the Trinity, seated on His heavenly throne. During that encounter, the prophet was marked by the presence of God. There was no way he could go back to life as usual. He was called by God in that moment to preach a specific message to a specific people, and his only response was “Here I am! Send me” (6:8). But here’s the wild part: the only details Jesus gave Isaiah about this new assignment was that the people he was going to preach to were not going to listen! They would be hard-hearted and spiritually blind — too proud to see and understand their need for God. There would certainly be discouraging moments in his ministry. There would definitely be times he felt ineffective and fruitless. But there was something he could always look back on: his encounter — hat life-changing moment and know that he was in the right place, doing the right thing, in the middle of God’s will.

You need an encounter that messes up your plans and changes the course of your life. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you will preach full time or serve on the mission field, but it does mean that whatever the Lord calls you to do, you will say “Here I am! Send me.”
