“And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” — 2 Kings 2:9 ESV
There is a spiritual principle in the Bible called “impartation.” Impartation is the ability to operate in the power of another person’s spirit. What took them years to accumulate can come to you in a moment, causing you to jet ahead spiritually and accomplish more, and accomplish it faster. Elisha took full advantage of this principle. There are several ways impartation works. God has provided a few different avenues for his power to transfer from one vessel to another. One common way is the laying on of hands, as seen in 2 Timothy 1:6). Another way is through personal mentorship. This is the most thorough way, to be sure. When you honor the anointing on someone’s life, and sit under their ministry, there is a transference that takes place. You obtain a portion of what they have. Think about how it works in the natural. If you hang around someone long enough, you will use the same phrases they do, use the same mannerisms they do, and you might even pronounce words in the same way they do. But impartation is not just something that takes place in the natural. It is spiritual, and it adds something powerful to your spiritual DNA. This can take place however God wants it to, and in some ways you might not expect. In this case, it happened when Elijah threw his mantle down to Elisha.
It may sound unusual to you, but it is real. God’s ways are higher than our ways, and the methods he chooses to use don’t have to appeal to your rational expectations of the way things should be. After sitting under Elijah’s ministry, Elisha had benefited spiritually just by proximity. But then he made a bold request of Elijah on his way up to heaven. He asked for a double portion of his spirit — and he got what he asked for! God honors it when you honor his servants, and he honors when you ask for more of his presence out of a place of hunger.
