“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me” — Matt. 11:29 ESV

In the Hebrew culture in which the Bible was written, and in the Hebrew world during Jesus’ ministry, life was seen as one big classroom.  The goal was to learn from life and live it better.  You’ll recall in the Book of Proverbs, the constant cry is “Get wisdom.”  Wisdom refers to how to live.  Wisdom is how you navigate life in a practical, moral way.

You could say wisdom is knowledge put into practice.  It’s not just knowing how to live; it is skillfully navigating life with all of its trials, temptations, pitfalls, potential disasters as it relates to money, family, the fear of the Lord, and so on.  How are we supposed to live? We need wisdom.

The Jews of Jesus’ day looked up to Rabbis as those who offered such wisdom.  They were to be able to not only teach you the Bible, but to teach you how to live successfully in light of the Bible.
Jesus was a Rabbi for His disciples.  When they entered into His school of discipleship, they were learning how to live.  Jesus was not only a Rabbi for His disciples 2,000 years ago — Jesus is our Rabbi today.

He extends the offer, “Come to me… take my yoke upon you… I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28-30).  As we join our lives to Jesus (become “yoked” to Him), we are able to learn from Him.  We learn from Him as we live with Him, so that we can live like Him.  What an amazing resource we can avail ourselves to — Jesus Himself is ours as our Rabbi, the One who teaches us as we live day by day.

Look to your Rabbi, the meek and lowly Jesus. He has so much to teach us and we have so much to learn.
