Holy One

“Holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners”—Heb. 7:26 ESV

Jesus is holy.  What is holiness? It is a state of moral purity and separation from anything sinful.  It is being radically different from anything that would defile man’s spirit or quench God’s Spirit.  Holiness is being in a separate category from anything that has to do with sin and being completely set apart for the purposes of God.

Some people have tried to “act” holy.  Not Jesus.  Jesus didn’t have to fake being holy because holiness is a state of being.  God says, “Be holy for I am holy,” not “Act holy” (1 Peter 1:16).  You can’t fake holiness. Holiness isn’t something you do. Holiness is something you are when you live in the realm of holiness. Jesus is holy.

And notice in Hebrews 7:26, the other attributes ascribed to Jesus — “innocent” — having no guilt over sin because He never committed sin and has never had a negative feeling in His conscience; “unstained” — having never defiled Himself by taking advantage of the pleasures of sin that were available to Him in the world; “separated from sinners” — Jesus came to relate to us, and understands our weaknesses, and knows what it is to be tempted, yet has no idea what it is like to sin.  He “knew no sin" (2 Cor. 5:21).  He is holy.

And because Jesus is holy, when we live in union with Him, we are becoming one with the Holy One.  That is the key to our holiness — this beautiful, glorious, unmistakable, powerful state of being in the Christian life — we become like Him when we are with Him, for He dwells in the realm of holiness. Look to Him, be with Him, and become one with Jesus, the Holy One.
