“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” — John 6:35 ESV
Jesus’ miracles always had a point to them. There was something to be learned. The miracles weren’t just for the sake of the miracles themselves. Yes, they met needs and healed hurts, but more than that, people leaned truth from the miracles, and we can still learn about the character of God from the miracles of Jesus today. He has something to say through each one.
When Jesus multiplied the bread to feed 5,000 people, the people were far more interested in the bread that provided temporary life than they were Jesus’ offer of eternal life. He used it as an opportunity to preach a message. The message was this — “Don’t waste your life on things things that are temporary. Give yourself fully to me, for if you feast on me and make me your life source, you will never be empty.”
Think about it — bread goes away. Jesus lasts forever. You feed on bread and it sustains you for a day. You feed on Jesus and He satisfies you forever.
Why do people keep living for this world instead of eternity? Why do people keep returning to sinful habits and pleasures? Why do they go back again and again to the “lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life” that the Bible says “are passing away” (1 John 2:17)? Because they didn’t find what they were looking for the first time.
Jesus is eternal life. You can’t separate eternal life from Him (1 John 5:20). Look to Him, live on Him, feast on Him, and you will live forever. You’ll never go back to things that can’t satisfy.
