“This is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit” — John 1:33 ESV
John the Baptist had a two-fold message. The two-fold message was two different revelations of who Jesus is, and showed two different aspects of the ministry of Jesus. The first part of John’s message was that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The second part of his message was that Jesus is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). In fact, only one gospel introduces Jesus as the Lamb of God, while all four gospels introduce Jesus as “He who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” (Matt 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:33).
In the Bible, and in our Christian experience, there is a divine encounter available to us called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. And Jesus is the one who baptizes you with the Holy Spirit. Not the Father, and not even the Spirit Himself. Jesus is the Spirit Baptizer, as John the Baptist declared. This is not an unimportant detail. Holy Spirit baptism is an actual encounter with Jesus — with the same life-giving, life-changing power that He operated in during His earthly ministry (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38).
The Holy Spirit is the heavenly substance that Jesus lived His life in, and the heavenly substance that He was anointed with when He ascended to the right hand of the Father — “Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing” (Acts 2:33). It is Jesus touching you, and when Jesus touches you, you will never be the same again. Have you received the Spirit? When is the last encounter with the Holy Spirit? Look to Jesus, just like you looked to Him as the Lamb, and He will pour out the powerful promise of the Spirit upon you today.
