What Must I Do?

“The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” — Acts 16:29-31 NLT

Kevin was sitting on a bench in the French Quarter, casually drinking a cheap beer and reading a book. Little did he know, his life was about to change forever. It was a Monday night, and as we always do, our team was in the middle of our Monday night outreach where we minister to the homeless and feed them red beans and rice (we call the outreach “Red Beans and Christ”).

My favorite thing about street ministry is that I never know what’s going to happen. I’m not in control. It’s just an adventure with God, and as I go in His name, He shows up and does powerful things that always take me by surprise. When we go, He goes with us! “Go ye therefore into all the nations and make disciples… and lo, I am with you alway” (Matthew 28:19-20 KJV)

When we preach the gospel to people, we keep it simple. We talk about Jesus — who He is, what He does, and what He can do for them, both in this life and for eternity. The Bible says there is power in this kind of simple gospel presentation — “the gospel is the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16 KJV). It’s a simple message with profound results.

As we spoke to Kevin, he asked a few questions about a relationship with Jesus, before surrendering and saying, “How do I start? What do I do?” Right there, he called upon the name of the Lord and received Jesus Christ as his Savior.

He said he likes to write, so I gave him a Bible, and went and bought him several notebooks and pens. When I came back to follow up with Kevin three days later, I told him to start reading the gospel of John. He surprised me by saying he had already started reading the Bible I gave him — he started in Genesis and had read all the way to Deuteronomy in three days!

Just like the people on the day of Pentecost who were cut to the heart and asked, “What shall we do?” in Acts 2, just like the Ethiopian Eunuch who interrupted the gospel presentation he was hearing and asked how he could respond in Acts 8, just like Lydia, whose heart was opened by the Lord when she heard the gospel in Acts 16, Kevin interrupted our gospel presentation to ask how to be saved. Why? Because there is unfathomable power in the simple gospel.

We are seeing results like this all the time as we go preach the gospel in New Orleans. Our amazing partners give to the ministry and get to share in the gospel with us. If you’re not already a monthly partner with us, what would keep you from partnering with us financially? Ask the Lord what He would have you give, and start making an eternal difference with us today! You can start the process very easily at cityrevivalnola.com/give or give by mail to the address below.

Thank you for your partnership in the gospel!

“For you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.” -- Philippians‬ ‭1:5 NLT
