Red Beans and Rice…
And the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Hey everybody! So much has been happening, we’re excited to fill you in on the details!

I just got done preaching a youth retreat for Victory Church here in New Orleans.  The theme of the retreat was Things Unseen. I preached three times — once on faith, once on revival, and once on the Holy Spirit.  Students were saved, baptized in the Holy Spirit, set free, and touched by the presence of God in life-changing ways.  Several testified that it was their first real encounter with God.

Right before that, we hosted a YWAM (Youth With A Mission) team from Minneapolis.  We did some evangelism training, they went on the streets with us and then on Saturday, they led worship and shared their testimonies at our Jesus Meeting in the French Quarter.

A couple weeks before that, I preached and ministered at House of Joy Church in Slidell, LA, which was a powerful, Spirit-filled service. People were refreshed by the presence of God and challenged by the word of God to be a light in the midst of the darkness of this world.  I will actually be returning to minister at House of Joy on Sunday, April 18th and then on to do an evangelism training session at REACH Community in Mandeville, LA on Wednesday, April 21st.

Street ministry has been consistently powerful each week. We have been taking time on our Saturday nights to hit the streets and minister to people after we meet in the building.  One thing is for sure: in the current chaotic climate of this world scene, there are people who are ready and willing to hear the gospel and respond! So many hearts are open to hear about Jesus right now, it’s exciting to be on an adventure with Him!

One ministry we have recently relaunched, that we are excited about, is our Red Bean Monday outreach! If you’re from New Orleans, you know that Mondays have traditionally been Red Beans and Rice day.  We like to carry this tradition on and minister to people at the same time.  What could be better than when you mix Red Beans and Rice with the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

The first time we went out, I took our interns, DJ & Kaylee, with us to a park near the French Market in the Quarter, and we handed out the red beans there.  It’s not the classiest place in the city, nor is it the safest.  It’s actually where a lot of train hoppers, drunks, and drug addicts gather.  This particular day, their hearts were open and they were very receptive to the gospel.  As we gave out food, we sat down to talk to people, to hear their stories, and to share the love of Jesus with them.  Nothing in the natural would make you think they would want to hear about Jesus, and nothing would make you think they would be receptive.  But as Romans 1:16 says, the gospel of Christ is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.  There is power in the gospel, there is power in the name of Jesus, and Jesus said we would receive power to be a witness when we receive the Holy Spirit.

Red Bean Mondays are a “slow burn.”  We’re building relationships.  We’re inviting people to church.  We hand out invitations to our Jesus Meetings, as well as Bibles, as we minister to people.  Over these few weeks, we have gotten to know more people, and they have gotten to know us. They appreciate the food, but more than that, they appreciate someone taking the time to stop, to look into their eyes, to hear their story, and to share the good news about Jesus Christ.

It’s easy to get caught up in your own life and not realize the depth of what’s happening with people around you.  So many people are without hope.  So many people are caught in situations they believe will never change.  So many people are living at the lowest possible level, with no faith that their life can turn around.  Matthew 4:16 says that when Jesus started his ministry, it fulfilled a prophecy of Isaiah that said, “Those who were living in darkness have seen a great light, and to those who were living in the shadow of death, a light has dawned.” Jesus told us that we are the light of the world.  For people who are stuck in life, for people who are caught in sin, for people who are captive to the devil, we are the light that shines in their darkness.

Jesus told us in John 4, “Behold… lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, for they are white for harvest” (John 4:35). Behold! Lift your eyes! Look!  Those are vision words.  All you have to do to be used by God in reaching souls is see people the way God sees them and do something about it.  Let me encourage you to look at the fields and join in on the harvest!

This outreach alone costs over $200 a month, as we feed 40-50 people a week, and minister to each one. We are thankful for our faithful monthly partners.  We have a FREE gift for those of you who decide to become partners with us today.  For those who stand with us to preach the gospel and make disciples in New Orleans, we will send a copy of my new devotional book, “Look to Jesus,” as a way of thanking you for your support.  If you’re not supporting our ministry financially, what would keep you from giving $100 or $25 or $50 a month to make an impact on eternity?  You’ll be joining a team of people who love Jesus and want to use their money to make a difference in the lives of people who have no hope.  It’s simple to get started: just go to http://cityrevivalnola.com/give
