“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God” — 2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV
The Bible is inspired by God. Second Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.” Second Peter 1:21 says the way the Bible came about was that “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” So, putting these two scriptures together, we see that inspiration is the process whereby Spirit-moved men wrote God breathed words.
The word for “inspiration” in 2 Timothy 3:16 means “breathed out by God.” The Holy Spirit is the breath of God. Just like you cannot speak words out of your mouth without breathing, the Holy Spirit, the breath of God, spoke the words of scripture and moved the writers to only write what God wanted written in a book so that we could have a written messaging system — a communication from God.
The Holy Spirit is the Author of Scripture. When people in the New Testament quoted the Old Testament, they often says “The Holy Spirit said...” and then they quoted the Scripture, recognizing that the words were transmitted by the precious Holy Spirit Himself (see Acts 1:16; 28:25; Heb. 3:7).
The author of Hebrews says, “the word of God is living and powerful” (4:12). He wrote this to Jews. The reason he brought this up is because the Jews believed that the word of God was a living being. Just like you and me. They thought that God took a part of Himself, and put it in written format so that when you read it, you are not just reading a book, but you are actually interacting with a person. You are having an encounter. They taught this because they had experienced the reality that the word is alive—it’s not just another book. When a preacher reads a passage to 100 people, it only says one thing but it also speaks 100 different things. This is because the Living Author who wrote it is in the room. He is the One who breathed the words, and He is still breathing on those words.
