A Light in The Darkness
“Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people;
but the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you.†-- Isaiah 60:1-2
When we look at the world and see the shape that it is in, “darkness†is a great way to describe it. One translation calls this darkness “gloom.†That’s another way to say it. It’s a mixture of hopelessness and uncertainty, a mixture of prevailing wickedness and a sense of impending doom, along with a general feeling of unsettledness about life and how things will go. From Coronavirus and the shutdown, to George Floyd and cities set on fire, one doesn’t have to wonder if we are in the last minutes of the last days. Believers and unbelievers alike are being shaken out of their sleepy state and it couldn’t be more obvious that we’ve entered into a new season that is ushering the events that lead to the return of Christ. “For the present form of this world is passing away†(1 Cor. 7:31).
The Bible describes in vivid detail what the world will be like in the last days. It speaks about two parallel realities: there will be great darkness, and at the same time, there will be a shining light that shines greater than the darkness. The darkness is the world and its system, and the shining light is you and I -- God’s people, the church. It may seem like things are getting darker and darker -- and they are -- but no matter how deep the darkness is, God’s glorious church will shine brighter than ever in these days and do great exploits right before Jesus comes back!
The Bible uses words like “light, glory, power†-- and those words are all the same thing. When Isaiah says “The Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you, it is a prophetic picture of the church, beginning on the Day of Pentecost. It is a picture of the person and power of the Holy Spirit upon the believer. It is exactly the same as when Jesus says “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses.†We are shining brightly in the darkness of this world, and we will lead people to Jesus and bring glory to Him forever.
The work that God has been doing here is indescribable. Truly His light has been shining brightly against the backdrop of darkness in this city! And though there are still restrictions on our ability to meet, it’s time for us to get back to the streets. Maybe we can’t have church in a building, but we can be the church outside the building. That’s what we’ve always been about, and that’s why we are out among the hurting and broken people. The streets are starting to fill back up with the lost, the addicted, and the bound people who desperately need the Light of the World to shine into their darkness. We are not waiting on our building to open -- instead, we are believing for hearts to open as we continue to minister to people and proclaim the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit.
